Measurement and optional classifiers in Mandarin Chinese

چکیده

Abstract This paper presents a compositional analysis of the fact that Mandarin individuating classifiers are systematically optional in various degree constructions (see also Lin & Schaeffer 2018 for experimental evidence), by taking mixed approach incorporating insights from Chierchia ( 1998 ; 2010 ) nouns denote kind terms and offer level individuation those Krifka (1995) (bare) numerals do not encode cardinality function. By considering as (e.g., Hackl 2001 Nouwen Rett 2014 Kennedy 2015 , among many others), advocated here embraces hypothesis locus variation between English lies neither semantics nor numerals, but measure operators: these linguistic elements (including sortal/individuating classifiers) necessary to mediate avoid semantic type-mismatch. The proposed only explains role (i.e., their syntactic optionality, along with dimension comparison), closely connects Bale Barner’s (2009) idea about quantity judgments comparative can be used reliable diagnostic mass-count distinction natural languages beyond English. Specifically, unclassified allow both non-cardinality monotonic dimensions variety based on indicates they neutral; tentative neutrality is thus suggested. Some factors leading discussed.

Association of Nouns and Classifiers by Bilingual Children in Mandarin Chinese

This study examines 7-to-12-year-old Singaporean bilingual children’s use of noun classifiers in Mandarin Chinese and their reasoning while making the associations between nouns and classifiers as a given task. The results show that the children made the association by applying their cognitive understanding of the properties and functions of the noun objects, comparing between them, as well as ...

Minimal Word in Mandarin Chinese

Minimal Word is of unique significance in characterizing certain ProsodicMorphological phenomena. This paper explores the minimal word effect in Mandarin Chinese. It is shown that the minimal word phenomena in Chinese provide strong evidence supporting McCarthy & Prince’s minimality theorem and most importantly, as argued in this paper, that the minimal word constraint can also be extended to m...

Mandarin Chinese Shenme in Interaction

Possessor Extraction in Mandarin Chinese

In this paper, I argue that genitive possessors should be distinguished from possessive modifiers and that possessor extraction is allowed in Chinese. Unlike previous analyses that treat sentences with possessors at the sentence-initial position as involving base-generation, I show that the construction at issue is island sensitive. My point of departure is Boškovic’s (2005) generalization that...
